Connective Tissue Grafting
Connective Tissue Grafting: Restore and Protect Your Gums
If your dentist tells you you have gum recession, you’re not alone. Gum recession can develop from thin gums, brushing too hard, or even after orthodontic treatment. Left untreated, it can lead to root exposure, sensitivity, and even tooth loss.
At Minnesota Periodontal Associates, Dr. Connie Lee offers connective tissue grafting to restore lost gum tissue, improve soft tissue thickness, and protect your smile for the long term. We’re proud to serve the Greater St. Paul and Twin Cities area.
What Is a Connective Tissue Graft?
A connective tissue graft is a type of gum grafting procedure designed to treat gingival recession by reinforcing areas where the gum line has pulled away from the teeth. This treatment involves taking donor tissue—usually subepithelial connective tissue—from the roof of your mouth (palate) and placing it at the recipient site. The goal is to increase soft tissue volume, cover exposed tooth roots, and improve both function and appearance.
Dr. Connie Lee, our experienced periodontist, may recommend connective tissue grafting for individual teeth, areas surrounding dental implants, or sites requiring soft tissue augmentation before implant placement for long-term health of your teeth and implants. Free gingival grafts, pedicle flaps, or coronally advanced flap techniques may also be used depending on the severity and location of the defect.
Candidates for Gum Grafting Procedures
Not everyone with gum recession will need a graft, but if you’re experiencing root exposure, sensitivity, or thinning gum tissue, you may be a strong candidate for soft tissue grafting. Dr. Connie Lee will assess your gum health, the extent of gingival recession, and any existing restorations or implants before recommending the right type of graft for your needs.
You may benefit from a connective tissue graft or other gum grafting procedure if you:
- Have exposed tooth roots or sensitive teeth
- Are planning to receive dental implants in an area with inadequate soft tissue
- Have thin gums prone to recession or damage
- Need to restore soft tissue thickness after previous dental surgery
- Are looking to improve the appearance of an uneven gum line
Even if you don’t currently feel discomfort, addressing gum defects early can help you avoid more complex issues in the future.
What to Expect During and After Your Procedure
The grafting process begins with local anesthesia with sedation, or without, depending on your comfort level. A small tunnel is created at the recipient site, and donor tissue is gently harvested from the roof of your mouth or other suitable donor site. The tissue is then placed inside the tunnel, secured with dissolvable sutures, and allowed to integrate with your existing gum tissue through your body’s natural healing process.
You may experience mild bleeding, swelling, or discomfort at the surgical site, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter prescribed medication. We provide specific instructions for postoperative care, including avoiding hard or spicy foods and sticking to soft, cool foods during healing. It’s important to avoid brushing the grafted area until our team gives the go-ahead.
Why Soft Tissue Grafting Matters
Gum recession doesn’t just affect how your smile looks—it also increases your risk for sensitivity, cavities, and future tooth loss. Soft tissue grafting improves the quality and quantity of your gum tissue, helping to:
- Prevent further recession
- Protect exposed roots
- Support long-term implant success
- Improve gum symmetry and smile aesthetics
Whether you’re dealing with root exposure or preparing for dental implant placement, grafting procedures, such as the epithelial connective tissue graft or other types of grafts, can provide lasting protection and support for your oral health.
